Let's go Deuces
It was sunny and in the 60’s, a beautiful day for mid November on Long Island, NY for the Shootout on the Sound Tournament presented by Sowell Lacrosse at Stony Brook University. The Deuces Varsity team comprised only of Dallas Jesuit players flew up Friday to take on some of Long Island's best club and high school teams. The Deuces played three games on Saturday outside of the round robin and three Sunday during the round robin.
The trip was best described by one of the Long Island native laxers that we met along the way as a “shock and awe campaign”. The Deuces went undefeated during the weekend with 4 wins 0 losses and 2 ties. There were 30+ college coaches at the event who watched the Deuces mix it up. The Long Island fans were a highlight of the trip and could not have been more hospitable and friendly. Special thanks to Sowell Lacrosse and coaches Ryan Wellner and James Montana for helping make the one day round robin format work for us by arranging extra games on Saturday for the Deuces squad. Saturday our players awoke to a beautiful unseasonably warm day, had a great breakfast at the hotel and then it was off to their controlled scrimmage/game with the Long Island Wolves, the Sowell Lacrosse fall select team. College coaches Ryan Wellner and James Montana often would stop the scrimmage to make coaching points to both teams. It was a very valuable experience to all of the players. The Deuces were up 4-2 at the half and won 6-2 all the while both teams had some fun and made some new friends. See our twit pic at the field courtesy of Brian Sapp.
After the game, the team went back to the hotel to shower, eat a boxed deli sandwich lunch and then it was off to the Stony Brook University football game.
The second game of the day came soon enough. The Deuces got to play a squad of Huntington High School players that had just come off of a bruising football playoff loss the night before. The Huntington squad did not have all of their horses but the players and coaches could not have been more gracious in putting together a competitive squad for the scrimmage. Huntington Lacrosse is a national powerhouse that has produced such phenoms as the Bratton brothers and Zach Howell. At the half, Deuces were up 3-0 with goals by McVay, Miller and McClure. The final was 8-0 Deuces with goals by Pollock, McClure (2), Buell and Petsos.
The final game on Saturday was against Canadian club team The Edge. The Deuces were up 2-1 at the half and the final score was tied 4-4. The Deuces had a chance to win the game in the last second but the Edge goalie made a fantastic one on one save at the doorstep. Goals were by McClure, Sapp, McVay and Buell.
The Dallas Deuces came out Sunday morning against the Turf City Oilers in the morning for their first game of the round robin with Solid “D” they were ahead 3-1 at the half and finished the game tied 4-4 with goals by McClure (2), Pollock and McVay. Four saves for Banister in the first half and five for Morris in the second. The Turf City Oilers were a gritty squad who had some excellent players.
After an hour break the Deuces came out strong against perennial powerhouse the LI Express. At the half, they were up 5-0. Morris had 5 saves and Petsos was 6-0 on the face-offs. The final score of the game was 8-2 Deuces over Express. Deuces finished strong with Banister making 5 saves in the goal during the second half. Goals were by McVay (3)G, Sapp (2)G, Pollock (1)G, 1(A), McClure (2)A, Buell (1)G, Coker (1)G, Fox (1)A and Maguire (1)A.
The Deuces final game was against the Long Island Warriors on Sunday. At the half it was Deuces up 2-0 with a final win for the Deuces 6-4. The Warriors goalie stood on his head during the game making 15 saves in a losing effort keeping the game close. Goals were by McClure (3)G, Sapp (1)G, Coker (1)G and McVay (1)G.
After the game, the team showered in the Stony Brook Lacrosse locker room and had a guided tour of the campus before heading home to big “D”!
